Yoga Summer Series 2026: Week 4

Week 4: The Heart Has Its Own Intelligence
Week 4: The Heart Has Its Own Intelligence

Several blind travelers once encountered an elephant for the very first time. One rested his hands on the elephant's leg and declared, "An elephant is like a tree." Another explored the trunk and insisted, "No, an elephant is like a great serpent." A third touched the ear. "You're both mistaken," he said. "It's like a fan." Another found the tail and argued that an elephant was nothing more than a rope.

Each person spoke honestly.

Each described exactly what they had experienced.

Yet none had encountered the whole elephant.

We often treat ourselves the same way.

Our body speaks.

Our mind speaks.

Our emotions speak.

Our memories speak.

Our thoughts speak.

Sometimes they even seem to disagree.

The body says, "Something doesn't feel right."

The mind asks, "Why?"

The heart quietly waits.

Not because it has no wisdom...

but because wisdom often arrives through relationship rather than reaction.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has never viewed us as isolated parts.

Blood is in relationship with Shen.

Yin is in relationship with Yang.

Every organ speaks with every other organ.

Health is not found by listening to only one voice.

It emerges as we begin to understand how the voices belong together.

Yoga gives us the opportunity to practice that listening.

In stronger practices, our patterns often become visible. We notice how we respond to challenge.

Do we rush?

Fight?

Withdraw?

Distract ourselves?

The pose doesn't create those responses.

It simply offers a place for them to be seen.

In Yin, something different happens.

As we become still, the outer traffic begins to quiet.

The body softens.

The breath slows.

The nervous system often settles enough that we can begin observing

the system from within.

Nothing new has to be created.

We simply become more available to what has been there all along.

Perhaps that is one of the heart's greatest gifts.

It reminds us that we don't have to choose between body and mind.

We don't have to decide which one is right.

Like the blind travelers, each offers an honest perspective.

And as each voice is welcomed into relationship with the others,

a fuller picture begins to emerge.

Tonight, our practice isn't about finding the perfect answer.

It's about becoming curious enough to let the whole elephant slowly reveal itself.

Anchor Question: What truthful voice within me have I not yet invited into relationship?

The blind travelers never discovered the elephant because one of them was wrong.

They discovered the elephant when they finally realized they needed one another.

That is the invitation of tonight's practice.

Perhaps your body noticed something before your mind did.

Perhaps your mind finally understood something your body has been trying to express for years.

Perhaps neither arrived at an answer.

That is perfectly alright.

The heart is rarely interested in quick conclusions.

It is interested in relationship.

As we leave the mat,

I invite you to notice the subtle conversations happening throughout your day.

Notice the moments your body quietly says,

"Pay attention."

Notice when your mind begins weaving a story around that sensation.

Rather than believing either one immediately, become curious.

Ask,

"What part of the elephant am I touching?"

Sometimes your body is remembering.

Sometimes your mind is protecting.

Sometimes your nervous system is recognizing an old pattern.

Sometimes your heart is inviting you toward something beautifully unfamiliar.

Wisdom isn't choosing one voice over another.

Wisdom is allowing truthful voices to remain in relationship long enough

for something larger to emerge.

That is why we practice.

Not to become someone different.

Not to silence our thoughts.

Not even to eliminate discomfort.

We practice so that the traffic surrounding the system becomes

quiet enough for us to witness the system itself.

Because when the body,

the mind,

and the heart begin listening to one another...

congruence naturally follows.

And where there is congruence...

trust grows.

Relationship deepens.

Love circulates.

Life becomes less about reacting...

and more about participating.

So as you head into your next cycle of learning in time-space,

perhaps your drishti isn't fixed on finding the right answer.

Perhaps it rests on a gentler question:

What truthful voice within me have I not yet invited into relationship?

May your body continue speaking.

May your mind remain curious.

May your heart patiently gather what each one offers...

until your life begins telling a story that none of them could have written alone.
